The Graduate Diploma in Visual Art is a one year full time (or equivalent) course nested within a two year full time (or equivalent) Master of Visual Art course. The course structure is designed to give students maximum flexibility in regard to their progression through the two courses: a student who enters the Graduate Diploma program and who is performing at an appropriate level will have the opportunity to extend their study into the Masters program. Conversely, a student admitted to the Masters program who wishes to exit the program early could graduate with a Graduate Diploma.

Entry into the Higher Degree program normally requires a minimum of the 4 year Bachelor of Visual Art from the Adelaide Central School of Art or equivalent (eg. 3 year Bachelor of Visual Art plus Honours). If the applicant presents with a three year visual arts degree or its equivalent, a minimum of two year's professional experience in a relevant field will be required. Special entry into the award may be permitted on the basis of professional standing/achievement in a relevant field. Professional standing will be measured by the applicant's artistic profile, including exhibitions, publications, awards and honours, and works in public collections.

The Application Materials to be submitted are maximum of 10-15 jpeg images (300kb-1mg) in digital format on disc showing a range of recent work relevant to the study or research proposal, Certificates and certified transcripts of academic records, including full details of all courses undertaken and grades obtained, Full curriculum vitae containing; exhibitions, grants/commissions/awards, reviews, details of any published papers, details of any experience since graduation which is relevant to the proposed field of research, Two referee forms, Evidence of any scholarship or other financial support from a government or private organization to the prospective candidate if an international applicant. Students who come from a country where English is not the first language will need to provide additional evidence of competence in the English language. Minimum acceptable qualifications in English are: IELTS overall band score of at least 6.0 or successful completion of a tertiary degree in English.
